Immigrant Detainees Abused at Alabama Detention Center
Immigrants about to be removed face serious challenges. Nevertheless, no one – neither citizen nor immigrant should be subjected to abuse.
An immigrant rights group has alleged that authorities abused immigrant detainees housed in a locally-run, long-term Alabama detention center while the detainees await asylum or deportation (or removal). The group, on behalf of both current and former detainees, gathered reports and described the abuse: Agents and personnel at the center physically beat detainees, failed to provide proper medical care, harassed them based on their race, and coerced them to sign deportation documents. For example, in 2013, agents beat up a shackled detainee who refused to sign the documents and sent him back to his cell with bruises on his face.
The advocacy group wants the center and its personnel investigated and to do away with the contract between the county government and federal immigration officials. It is clear to the group that the center is a dangerous place and that the detainees should be released or housed elsewhere.
